Kultur eller Velfærd? / Culture or Welfare?

Culture or Welfare?

The new government, established in September last year, has experienced an intense criticism about various broken promises and cutbacks on the budget. Especially the Minister of Culture has met the critiques up front because of different statements, one of them being that it was judged a better alternative to close a few small cultural institutions than to cut back on funding to all cultural institutions in general. This has made a stir, especially amongst the smaller cultural institutions in Copenhagen, who are dependent on the funds and will have to close if the funds are taken away from them. However, being completely honest, don’t you believe that there are enough cultural offerings in Copenhagen? It seems that quite a few of the cultural institutions in Copenhagen cannot survive without public funds, which makes me wonder if the demand curve is slightly skewed? Of cause it is sad for those who must shut down and go unemployed, however, when I think about the challenges we face welfare wise (waiting lines in the hospital, deteriorated standards within elderly care, schools and public buildings on the verge of demise) then I am on the side of the Minister of Culture because I do not see the point in using 2,5 million DKK on cultural diversity in Copenhagen over Welfare - do you?

What is rocking on a Friday or Saturday night?

What is the view of a perfect Friday or Saturday night according to you? Are you the party person always looking for a place to go all out? Or the cozy person just looking forward to a quiet night in front of the television or a movie?

In Sweden we have printed the term “fredagsmys” which is all about having a quiet night, relaxing and making the evening about eating well and watching a movie. But is that how it is supposed to be now, are Fridays just about “fredagsmys” or should it be more about partying?

In my view is Saturday the perfect day in the week to go all in, or all our, whatever is the best in your opinion. On a Saturday you are free from work and probably free from work the next day as well. Then you are not tired from work and can go all out, partying like a rock star that you are. But that might just be my opinion?

However, in Malmo there are a lot of places to visit, and some of the hottest clubs might be Koi, Hipp, Chili, Babel or Etage, all located in the city of Malmo. This places would I recommend for persons around 25 years, looking for a fun night out. Do you know any other place that you would like to recommend? Please do!

What is your opinion of the perfect weekend? What do you do on a Friday or Saturday night? Love to hear your thoughts…

Is the market in Malmö really legal or is it black?

(Store in the picture has nothing to do with the article)

Walking down central Malmö you are bombarded by discount offers of everything imaginable anywhere you look! It can be a 70 kr hair cut or a Falafel for 25 kr. Can these offers really be honest offers or are they black? Stripped of their taxes making them a pure bargain. Some would argue that they are offers fitted for the demographic area in Malmö because of their discounted prices. But there are many disadvantages to this as well, many people especially illegal immigrants are taken advantage of by letting them work at these places but then failing to pay them their salary or not the total amount they are worth. Is this a direct result to that they cannot afford to pay their employees because of the low costs or do they feel they can exploit these people because they have no legal rights as Swedish citizen or co-workers.

What is your stand point in this matter? Is it okay to shop at these low costs because many people in Malmö are poor? Or should we stand up for the human rights everybody is initialed to?

Joe & The Juice - fail or success?

(EN) Joe & The Juice – fail or success?

Success – obviously. Joe & The Juice, a juice bar inspired by Starbucks and with roots in Copenhagen, has opened more than 30 stores since the start-up in 2002 including Sweden, England and Germany. The owner of the juice bar chain, Kaspar Basse, expects to more than double the number of stores within few years with a focus on England, Scandinavia and USA, and to reach 1000 stores at some point. Clearly Joe & The Juice has been a success, but I have only been there once myself. I’m not really captivated by the concept, the loud music and the atmosphere, to me it’s not cozy at all, however I’m sure the juice is healthy and it seems like the food is ok as well. Also Joe & The Juice has had some troubles with the food authorities, a reputation for not paying their employees for training and has furthermore urged its personnel to lie about hygiene conditions in the stores – FAIL in my opinion!

Is it ok not to pay new employees for joining compulsory training? Is it ok to advice employees to lie? Why is it that so many companies make mistakes and break laws in the process of expansion? Is it a greed for money, is it happening as a result of eagerness for success? Does healthiness and social responsibility go hand in hand in this company? Will Joe & The Juice employees do whatever it takes to get a job and work for a “cool” company? Why are people so keen about this particular juice bar chain? And why is it so chilled and cool to be a juicer (the “cool” word for squeezing fruits)? Is Joe & The Juice a success to you? Myself, whether I like it or not, I actually believe the juice bar chain has great potential abroad. We would like to hear your thoughts about Joe & The Juice!

(DK) Joe & The Juice – Succes eller ej?

Går sundhed og socialt ansvar hånd i hånd hos Joe & The Juice?

Pligten Kalder - Tag et job i Netto?/Duty Calls – Cash in a great job at the Supermarket!

Duty Calls – Cash in a great job at the Supermarket!

The recent debate in Copenhagen and in Denmark is all about rights and duty! Mostly the duty - when it comes to taking on a job that is way below your qualifications!

The situation for most students in DK is that once you are done with your studies your are entitled to a day-payment from the union where you hold a membership. This gives the new academics time to apply for jobs that are within their area of expertise. I understand that in the time of crises everyone must contribute as much as they can in order for society to move forward. I understand that it might be impossible to get your dreamjob straight away and that you must take on something else meanwhile but come, on a job at Netto? (discount supermarket) That is the suggestion from the Danish minister of employment to academics.

In addition, I cannot help feeling ridiculed when experts and politicians share their belief on how the newly educated academics prefers to get the day-payment and spent their time daydreaming instead of wanting to contribute to society! I have not met anyone with that mindset. None of the co-students I have spoken to has shared this point of view. Mostly, students want to get a job, where they can use the newly acquired skills, be happy and thrive! Furthermore, these statements compared to those a few years back where students should hurry up and get through the education system faster do not correspond at all – Why should we hurry so? To get a job at Netto?

Mostly though, I feel this discussion has gone way overboard, whether it is us students taking the heat or some other group – I do believe that the promises made during the election rounds was not to find a scapegoat to blame? It was to create more jobs – at least that is how I interpreted it! But that tone of voice has certainly changed. It is ones duty to work – we are in the middle of financial crises! But COME ON now! What if you cannot get a job? Then what? I would like to know exactly how many letters of rejection unemployed academics each have attained because they were either over or under-qualified? I would like to know how the corporate world reacts to an applicant whose last job was a one year position at the till in Netto? Most of all would I like to know what the government is doing to secure jobs in the future – not just within road building but also in a wider range of industries? Is it not possible to conduct a genuine political discussion on what to do with the future instead of blaming others for the current misfortune!

It is a baby Princess

How healthy is your Lunch?

When it is Lunch time what is your choice to eat? Is it a Burger on the nearest MacDonald’s, is it the lunch of today on your favorite lunch place or is it a salad to go?

In Malmo the places to eat your lunch is many. Since I started working in the center of Malmo have I discover these many, and different place where people eat their lunch. For example, when in a hurry, but still want to eat healthy I would go to Salads and Smoothies to get a salad on the run. When I´m in for some Italian I would recommend the restaurant Spot or Vespa and when I´m hungry for fish I would go to Koi or JP.

However, what is in my interest to know is how much should you eat on your lunch break? Should you eat much or little? And how healthy is your lunch choice? Is it really healthy to eat too much or should you eat too much to make it last al day?

For example, even if I think that my salad is a healthy choice, it has been proven that one salad could be enough for one day, or even too much in some case.

What is your view regarding lunch? How much is enough? What is healthy in your opinion? And do you have any Lunch place to recommend?

XX Marlena!
